Nautical Archaeology

The term 'nautical' is a reference to seafaring vessels.  Nautical  Archaeology is a specific reference to the study of the construction and use of seafaring vessels.  This is done through the study of the remains of these vessels, both underwater and on land.

Through the study of ancient and modern vessels, we can learn much about history and the people who created them.  We can also learn about the world view of peoples in ancient cultures, and how different societies interacted with one another.

Shipwrecks and Sunken Ships

Nautical archaeologists have discovered the remains of vessels that indicate early people may have traveled and explored much more of the world than previously thought.  And their navigational instruments may have been more complex.

Ancient Civilizations

The seeds of humanity often sprouted up along the edges of the seas and islands of the oceans.  Nautical archaeologists seek out the remains of vessels that may have been discarded or intentionally sunk, abandoned and covered in silt.

Lost and Sunken Treasure

The artifacts left behind by ancient civilizations tell us much about the origins of sea-going commerce and trade.  Nautical archaeologists make deductions about the extend and type of trade and commerce that took place based on the types of containers that may be found in the remains of shipwrecks, as well as the navigational instruments found therein.

Tools of the Trade

Nautical Archaeologists employ a variety of tools and types of equipment in the study of the seas and ocean, and along the shorelines of creeks, rivers, and streams.  This section discusses some of the innovations that allow researchers to study the ocean floor in greater detail as well as deeper than ever before.
