Marine and Maritime Archaeology

The term marine is a reference to the seas or oceans.  Marine Archaeology is the study of human interaction with the sea through the remains of vessels, underwater shipwrecks, remains of harbors and ancient cities that are now covered with water.

This site employs the term 'underwater archaeology' as a blanket term to cover the study of archaeology, not only in the seas and oceans, but in creeks, streams, rivers, and lakes.  Underwater archaeologists may work in a variety of climates and types of water.

Departments

Shipwrecks and Sunken Ships

Many of the shipwrecks of the world occur in the seas and oceans.  Maritime archaeologists seek out the remains of these vessels in water all the way from a few feet deep to many miles deep.

Ancient Civilizations

The seeds of humanity often sprouted up along the edges of the seas and islands of the oceans.  And the remains of many ancient civilizations have been inundated with water following the last ice-age.  Maritime archaeologists seek out the remains of ancient civilizations along the edges of ancient shorelines.

Lost and Sunken Treasure

The artifacts left behind by ancient civilizations tell us much about the origins of sea-going commerce and trade.  The careful preservation and study of  the cargos of early sea-going vessels can tell marine archaeologists much about early sea-faring people, how cultures interacted and how societies influenced each other.

Tools of the Trade

Marine Archaeologists employ a variety of tools and types of equipment in the study of the seas and ocean, and this section discusses some of the innovations that allow researchers to study the ocean floor in greater detail as well as deeper than ever before.
