Underwater Archaeology Homepage Welcome to the Underwater Archaeology Homepage from UnderwaterArchaeology.com. An international reference for underwater archaeology resources and information.
Water covers nearly 3 quarters of the Earth's surface. The story of humanity's attempts to cross it and navigate it is told by the remains of the vessels they have used and the artifacts they have left behind, on the beds of our creeks, streams and rivers, and in the icy-cold depths of the oceans. Much can be learned about ancient civilizations from the artifacts they have left behind on ancient sea beds and along the edges of ancient shorelines. Our globe is covered with nearly two-thirds water, and the distribution of that water is constantly changing. After the last ice-age, prehistoric shorelines may have changed,- leaving ancient cities covered in water. The technological advances of today have made it possible for researchers to recover sunken treasures that have been lost on the bottom of the ocean for hundreds and even thousands of years. The artifacts tell us about the history of a by-gone era, and require careful handling and preservation. Underwater archaeology involves the search for, and proper conservation of artifacts.
There are vast areas of the ocean floor that have never been explored, and it will be up to a new generation of ROV's to illuminate the secrets held there. From the invention of the aqua lung to today's deep-sea ROV's, the section discusses the technological advancements that are making a new era of underwater archaeology possible,- deep sea exploration! In the legends of lost cities, few stories have inspired the imaginations as much as the story of the lost city of Atlantis. It is a tale of an advanced civilization, with advanced architecture, a system of canals, and an empire with a vast military might until one day when it was swallowed up by the seas in a cataclysmic disaster!
